Key West is one of the most haunted towns in America and now you have the opportunity to explore the secrets hidden on this amazing island!  The very haunted Old Town Manor is a bed and breakfast nestled in the Old Town of Key West where many ghostly sightings have been reported, witnessed and captured!

Guests and investigators have witnessed spirits they believe to be Genevieve and Dr. Warren (former residents of 511 Eaton Street) walking hand in hand through the inn.  Several EVPs captured suggest that the couple still spends time in their garden and phantom sweet smells throughout the bed and breakfast suggest that more than just their memory lingers around the inn.

Witnesses have seen full-blown apparitions, experienced electrical issues with their equipment, heard unexplained footsteps and the sound of an old typewriter.  Is the pacing that guests hear the sounds of Dr. Warren walking up and down the corridors, worrying over his patients?  Is the woman seen wearing a formal dress roaming through the gardens, Genevieve taking care of her prize possessions?  The lights flickering, small objects disappearing and reappearing suddenly, and disembodied whispers leave very little doubt that the Warrens still reside in their Victorian Mansion.

But your stay in the Old Town Manor Haunted Bed and Breakfast is not the end of your haunted experiences in Key West.  We’ll be joining Key West Ghost & Mysteries Tour for Key West’s Premier Haunted Walking Tour!  For 90 minutes you will walk through America’s second oldest city and become intimately familiar with the spirits that still linger about the island.  Haunted Victorian Mansions, Key West’s Oldest Graveyard, Enchanted Robert the Doll, Haunted Pubs, Count Von Cosel and Eleyna, Exclusive Access to the Oldest House, The Watcher…and much, much more!

In the private garden of Old Town Manor, enjoy lectures on Demonology, Psychic Readings, Ghost Hunting 101, Exorcisms and more

Old Town Manor, formerly known as Eaton Lodge, was first erected in 1886 just after the Great Fire that cost $2,000,000 in property damage.  It is still believed that the Spanish Empire set the fire to destroy the Cigar Factories and shut down Key West.  But the Spanish underestimated the resilience of the residents.

Samuel Otis Johnson constructed the Victorian Mansion in a classic 3-Story Greek Revival architectural style and it was remodeled in 1937 to maintain the historic nature of the property.  The house has served in many different capacities since its inception including: grocery and butcher shop, a residence, doctor’s office, boarding house and a bed and breakfast inn.

Probably the most notable residents (and those that still tend to linger) are Genevieve and Dr. William Richard Warren.  In 1913 this surgeon and general practitioner purchased the property at 511 Eaton Street from the original owner.  Warren practiced general medicine from their home.  The ground floor front porch served as the waiting room with the interior rooms use for exams and minor surgeries.  Genevieve was a descendent from one of the island’s oldest families and was known for compassion in caring for the families in the community.

Key West is rich with history in its own right.  It is the second oldest city in Florida and known to be one of the most haunted in America!  In 1846 a hurricane washed away the original cemetery, disturbing the graves of the dead and scattering them throughout the forest.  It’s no wonder that so many restless spirits still roam the streets of the town.  What is now known as the Historic Cemetery in the Old Town was started in 1847 and a tour is great insight into the colorful history of the people of Key West.  One of the most notable persons buried in the cemetery is World War I veteran, Miguel Cabeza.  He was in a relationship with a multi-racial woman and the Ku Klux Klan tarred and feathered him.  Seeking revenge, Cabeza shot and killed one of the KKK member’s on Duval Street on Christmas Eve in 1921.  The members pulled him from his cell and lynched Cabeza but apparently that was sufficient so they shot him as well.

Those who are familiar with the Chucky movies will want the opportunity to meet the inspiration for its creation, Robert the Doll.  The doll is over a century old and rumored to be possessed.  Key West painter and author, Robert Eugene Otto, was given the doll in 1906 by a servant from the Bahamas that supposedly practiced black magic and voodoo.  Otto’s parents heard him speaking to the doll on many occasions and always assumed that he was simply responding to himself in a different voice but later came to believe that the doll was actually speaking.  Neighbors reported seeing the doll move from window to window when the family was out of the home.  You can meet Robert, but make sure to be polite and always ask permission before taking his picture.  Otherwise you may live (or die) to regret it!

Other notable residents are Count Carl Von Cosel and his immortal love Eleyna.  Cosel was a German immigrant who served as an X-Ray technician at the U.S. Marine hospital in Key West.  He was a colorful man that claimed the title of Count when actually his name was Carl Tanzler but he was, in fact, German.  He also claimed over nine University degrees, a Submarine Captain and an electrical inventor.  Interesting and eclectic are two words that come to mind when considering Carl, but perhaps “mad” is one that should also be applied.  While working at the hospital he made the acquaintance of Eleyna Hoyos, a 22-year-old Cuban woman who had served as an entertainer until she contracted tuberculosis.  Although she spurned his advances, he insisted that he could save her with a special X-Ray machine combined with daily doses of his special “tonic.”

The miraculous treatment failed and Eleyna eventually succumbed to her disease.  Upon her death Von Cosel was obsessed with restoring her to life.  Her family buried her in a common grave but with convincing from Von Cosel, they allowed her body to moved to a stone mausoleum and embalmed.  He was the only one with a key to the crypt and rumor has it, he installed a phone inside so that he could speak to her.  After 2 years, Von Cosel removed her corpse and began to attempt to “restore her to life” with the use of wiring, wax, plaster-of-paris and glass fuselage.  He dressed Eleyna in a wedding dress and often slept with her as his wife.  After the rumors started floating around Key West, Eleyna’s sister finally demanded the truth of Von Cosel and as soon as he showed her the corpse, she called the police.

Count Von Cosel was charged with grave robbing and abusing a corpse.  Unfortunately by the trial, the statute of limitations had expired so although he was convicted, he was not sentenced.  His house (and secret laboratory) as well as the mausoleum where Eleyna momentarily laid to rest are part of the must-see tour of Key West.
